Net Zero Festival 2020: Cambridge’s offering at the inaugural event

Cambridge Zero’s director, Dr Emily Shuckburgh, is among over 100 business leaders, politicians, academics and campaigners exploring the importance of the net-zero transition in business
This year saw the announcement from Business Green of the first-ever Net Zero Festival, which invites over 100 top business leaders, politicians, academics and campaigners to explore the net-zero transition and what it means for the future of businesses.
The event is going ahead virtually, with Business Green adamant that “we cannot let the Covid-19 pandemic to derail the net-zero transition”. Taking place across three days from 30 September, the event will be broadcast from the BT Sport studios in Stratford and includes panel debates, interviews and documentaries to shed light on the development of a net-zero economy.
Cambridge is showing support from the university’s Cambridge Zero project. Cambridge Zero not only aims to develop greener technologies, but to “harness the full range of the university’s research and policy expertise, developing solutions that work for our lives, our society and our economy”.

Cambridge Zero will see its director, Dr Emily Shuckburgh, as one of the headline speakers at the event. She is a reader in environmental data science at the Department of Computer Science and Technology. A mathematician and climate scientist, she is a fellow of Darwin College, the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, the British Antarctic Survey and an associate fellow of the Centre for Science and Policy. From this list alone, you can see how she has ended up as the director of Cambridge Zero.
In the past she has worked at École Normale Supérieure in Paris and at MIT. She is a fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society and co-chair of its Climate Science Communications Group. She has also acted as an advisor to the UK government on behalf of the Natural Environment Research Council.
In 2016, she was awarded an OBE for services to science and the public communication of science. She is co-author with the Prince of Wales and Tony Juniper of Climate Change (A Ladybird Expert Book).
Dr Emily Shuckburgh is speaking in the auditorium on 30 September, 9.40am-9.50am. Her talk is titled The Scientific Case for Net Zero.
